The Logitech Harmony 650 could be considered as the Best Universal Remote control currently in the market today. Sure, it might not be the latest and most advanced model out there, but I have my justification for considering it as such. I would say it is the ideal universal remote controller, even if I have a few gripes with it. Nothing is really perfect after all. So if you are searching for a universal remote controller but have no idea about models and stuff, or even actually planning to purchase the Logitech Harmony 650, then continue reading further. Hopefully, it would greatly assist you in having an informed decision on whether the Logitech Harmony 650 is the right and can be presented as best universal remote 2017 for you.
1. The design:
The design is just the icing on the cake. At first glance, it bears quite a resemblance to those 90’s era mobile phones. (Although not as cool looking as the Harmony Elite) But what really matters is functionality and ease of use. It fits perfectly in the palm of the hand, and the layout of the buttons are well arranged. This makes it comfortable to grip, and also the basic functions easily within reach. This eliminates those inconvenient moments where you have to look into the remote control just to quickly pause while watching your favorite movie. Aside from the small LCD display, it is also back lit. This also makes it ideal to use for bedroom TVs.
2. The battery:
This might come off as unexpected for some, but it uses the standard AA batteries. Personally, I’m one of those people who prefer having the option to standard AA batteries on certain devices such as digicams and remote controls. Despite that being the case, it would still have been better if they included a docking cradle or recharging option. On the bright side, it doesn’t too much power, so the batteries last for quite some time. (Though I also recommend having a rechargeable battery for it, just like most battery powered devices that are regularly used, and just use a disposable one in case of emergency)
3. The price:
This is one of the main selling points of the Logitech Harmony 650. With an average price of around $40 more or less (as of writing this) you also get to avail of features that are only present in high-end universal remote controls. If you have no need for the overly advanced features you would not even make use of at all, then this might really be the universal remote of choice for you.
4. Key features:
Along with the price, this is what makes the Logitech Harmony 650 the Best Universal Remote control.
First of all, the Logitech Harmony 650 allows you to control up to 8 devices. (Be wary that there is an older variant though that only allows you to control up to 5 devices) That saves you from the confusion and mess of having 8 remote controls lying around. All you need is just one press to watch your favorite movie as your TV and movie player and everything else turns on for you.
Another useful, notable feature is the remote assistance feature. Think of it as a troubleshooting feature similar to those you would encounter in a PC that would keep asking you a series of questions until things have been resolved. This only prompts up whenever something is wrong, such as if your TV didn’t switch on, so it wouldn’t be a bother.
The LCD display also tells you what devices are currently in use right now. Logitech’s great database also ensures that the devices that you are adding would be compatible with it.
5. User friendliness:
The point of universal remote controls is to make everything easier, though sometimes this becomes a contradiction if the initial setup is quite a hassle. This isn’t the case with the Logitech Harmony 650 where programming what devices to use is easy, there is no need to summon a technician.
While I find it hard to find actual faults with this unit, here are just some of my gripes. It isn’t compatible with devices that have no infrared devices, so no Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. This might not be a big deal for some, but not for some gamers like me, as this affects consoles like the PS3 and PS4. Although it is really just a small setback and I could live with it.
I’ll leave it to you if you would consider the Logitech Harmony 650 as one of the Best Universal Remote controls around. But it is definitely the best budget option for anyone after the key features but either happens to be on a tight budget or has no need for the other features of the more expensive universal remote controllers.
